Core Concepts
The minimum vocabulary: source, compiler, fact, evidence, provenance, index, query, agent.
Only eight terms are needed to read the rest of the documentation. Each links to a fuller page.
| Term | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Knowledge Source | Anything EKOS can observe: a repository, SQL files, a Confluence space, a folder of PDFs, a compiled assembly. See Sources. |
| Compiler | The pipeline of deterministic passes (build → recover → resolve → compile → commit) that turns observations into knowledge. See Knowledge Compiler. |
| Fact | A statement about an object or relationship, e.g. CustomerService depends on CustomerRepository. See Facts. |
| Evidence | The concrete origin of a fact: a source location and the fragment it was read from. See Evidence. |
| Provenance | Which pipeline run and stage wrote a fact, and from which artifact. See Provenance. |
| Knowledge Index | The compiled, queryable result in your workspace's .ekos/ directory. See Knowledge Index. |
| Query | A question answered from the index — keyword search, a graph traversal, an EKL statement, or ekos ask. See Queries. |
| Agent | An AI client (Claude Code, any MCP client) that reads the index through MCP. See Agent Integration. |
